Carreg Y Derlwyn

The walk up Carreg Y Derlwyn rewards you with proper views across Cardigan Bay and inland toward the Cambrian Mountains. It's a modest peak by Welsh standards - nothing that'll leave you gasping - but the moorland approach from Aberystwyth is straightforward enough that you won't spend your whole day mucking about on the slopes.

What you get is a rocky outcrop with that satisfying scramble at the end. The views are the main draw here. On a clear day you're looking out across open country, and the light changes are genuinely worth the walk. It's the sort of place where you'll want to sit down for twenty minutes and actually look at what's around you rather than tick a box and move on.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might find the final push a bit much, and it's not thrilling enough to hold toddlers' attention. Walkers will appreciate the moorland landscape and the chance to get away from the honeypot attractions that circle Aberystwyth. History buffs won't find much up here - it's about the walking and the view, not the backstory.

Allow two to three hours from Aberystwyth town centre, depending on fitness and how long you linger. There's no charge, obviously, and no facilities on the hill itself. The nearby Woodlands Caravan Park and Brynllwyd Glamping both sit well for a base if you're making this part of a wider Ceredigion trip. Worth doing on a decent day.
