Standing at 457 metres, this relatively modest peak offers surprisingly rewarding views across the Llanberis Pass without the crowds that swarm Snowdon's lower slopes. The walk up from Llanberis takes about an hour and a half through mixed woodland before opening onto rougher moorland terrain.

Families with older children will find this a proper introduction to Welsh mountain walking - steep enough to feel like an achievement but not so brutal that anyone's put off hiking for life. The path can get muddy after rain, and there's nothing resembling facilities once you leave the village behind.

What makes Derlwyn worth the effort is the perspective it gives you of Snowdon itself. From here, you get the full drama of the Snowdon massif without craning your neck from the valley floor. On clear days, you can see right across to Anglesey and the Menai Strait.

For those staying at one of the holiday parks around Llanberis - Llanberis Touring Park or Snowdon View Holiday Park are both within easy reach - this makes an excellent half-day expedition. Start early to avoid the afternoon crowds heading for the Snowdon Railway, and you'll have the summit largely to yourself. The descent gives you time to plan your next assault on something more ambitious.
