Moel Cynghorion

Steep grassy slopes and rocky outcrops mark this lesser-known summit that sits quietly between Snowdon and the Glyderau range. Moel Cynghorion rises to 674 metres, offering surprisingly good views across the Llanberis Valley without the crowds that swarm nearby peaks. The name translates as 'Hill of the Councillors' - though quite why ancient Welsh councillors chose this particular spot for their meetings remains a mystery.

Climbing from Llanberis takes about two hours, following paths that wind through old slate workings before opening onto the grassy ridge. It's proper hill walking rather than a family stroll - you'll need decent boots and waterproofs. The summit itself is nothing spectacular, just a modest cairn and endless views, but that's rather the point.

This peak works brilliantly for experienced walkers staying at sites like Llanberis Touring Park or Bryn Gloch Caravan & Camping Park. You can easily combine it with a circuit taking in Moel Eilio to the north, making a cracking day out while everyone else queues for the Snowdon Railway. Kids under about 12 might find it a bit of a slog, but teenagers who enjoy proper hiking will love the sense of achievement. The lack of obvious tourist infrastructure means it stays refreshingly quiet even in peak season.
