Llanberis Lake Railway

A narrow-gauge railway that chugs along the shoreline of Llanberis Lake, offering views of Snowdon that don't require you to climb it yourself. The line runs for a few miles through proper mountain scenery - you're looking across at slate quarries, steep wooded banks, and the lake itself stretching out below. It's a heritage railway in the best sense: actual Victorian-era engineering, not a theme park ride pretending to be one.

The journey takes you from Llanberis village (near Caernarfon) on a route that opened in 1896. Some of the carriages are original, which adds to the appeal if you're into that sort of thing. The locomotives are working museum pieces - you can hear the mechanics of them properly, not just smell diesel. Families with kids aged six upwards tend to have the best time. Under that age, the novelty wears off after twenty minutes and you're stuck on a slow train with a bored toddler.

It's worth allowing a full afternoon rather than squeezing it in between other things. Check the timetable first - services run seasonally and aren't daily. Admission isn't free, but the cost is reasonable for what you get. The journey feels genuinely purposeful rather than circular, which elevates it above your typical tourist train.
