Moel Eilio

Five kilometres southwest of Llanberis, this 726-metre peak sits in Snowdon's shadow yet offers something its famous neighbour rarely does: proper solitude. The ascent from Llanberis follows the old quarry railway track before branching off on clear paths through former slate workings. It's a straightforward climb that rewards you with spectacular views across the Menai Strait to Anglesey, plus a cracking perspective of Snowdon itself from an angle most visitors never see.

Walkers looking for a less crowded alternative to the main Snowdonia peaks will find this spot ideal. The route takes around three hours return, making it manageable for reasonably fit families with older children. Early morning starts work best - you'll often have the summit to yourself while crowds queue for the Snowdon Railway.

What makes Moel Eilio special is its proximity to the old Dinorwig Quarry workings, creating an industrial archaeology trail as much as a mountain walk. The scattered slate ruins add real character to the landscape.

Staying at one of the nearby parks like Bryn Gloch or Llanberis Touring Park puts you right at the doorstep for this walk. It's free to climb, naturally, and pairs well with exploring Llanberis village afterwards for a proper Welsh tea.
