Craig Cwmbychan

Standing at 460 metres above the Welsh countryside, this rocky summit offers a proper workout without the crowds that swarm Snowdon. The climb up Craig Cwmbychan involves a steep scramble over loose slate and grass, but the panoramic views across Snowdonia make every huffing step worthwhile. From the top, you'll spot Caernarfon Castle in the distance and the Menai Strait glinting beyond.

Serious walkers will love the challenge, though families with young children might find the final approach too demanding. There's no marked path for much of the route, so decent navigation skills are essential. Allow three to four hours for the round trip from any decent parking spot.

The peak works brilliantly as part of a walking holiday based at one of the nearby parks around Llanberis or Beddgelert. Snowdon View Holiday Park and Plas Gwyn Caravan & Camping Park both put you within striking distance, while Bryn Gloch Caravan & Camping Park sits closest to the mountain itself. Pack plenty of water and check the weather before setting off - the Welsh mountains don't suffer fools gladly.
