Caernarfon Castle

The castle walls rise straight from the water's edge like something from a fever dream - all massive polygonal towers and crenellations that announce themselves long before you actually arrive in Caernarfon. Built by Edward I in the 1280s to crush Welsh rebellion, it's one of those fortress-monuments that genuinely stops you in your tracks.

What makes it sing isn't just the architecture - though the sheer scale of those towers, named after imperial Rome, is properly impressive. It's the setting. The castle sits on the Menai Strait with Snowdonia looming inland, which means you get fortress, water view and mountain drama all at once. Inside, there's a museum tracking military history and Welsh resistance, though frankly most people spend their time on the walls themselves, walking the entire circuit and peering down at the town below.

History obsessives will lose hours here. Families with restless kids will manage a good two hours, maybe three if the weather holds and you grab chips from town afterwards. The walk around the ramparts is fairly strenuous in places - the stairs between towers are steep and narrow.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Coed Helen is barely a ten-minute walk away, which is convenient - factor in a morning or afternoon visit rather than a rush job. Summer gets rammed with school groups, so spring or autumn feels more breathing room. The castle commands serious respect as a medieval stronghold, and it deserves the time.
