Dolgamfa cairn

A Bronze Age cairn sitting on the hillside above Aberystwyth, Dolgamfa is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan a trip around. The stones are modest - a modest pile of them, really - but there's something about standing where someone stood 4,000 years ago that shifts your perspective a bit.

It's not a dramatic ruin or a reconstructed monument with interpretation boards. What you get is the cairn itself, weathered and patient, with views across Cardigan Bay that frankly make the archaeological credentials almost secondary. On a clear day you can see right across to Pembrokeshire.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination in itself - more of a pleasing detour if you're already out exploring the hills around Aberystwyth. The walk up is straightforward enough, though the ground can be boggy depending on recent rain. Allow an hour round trip from the nearest parking, though you could easily spend longer just sitting with the view.

If you're staying at one of the local campsites - Tyn Ffordd Fach or Woodlands are closest - it's a natural addition to your walking routine rather than something requiring a special journey. The practical details are thin on the ground: there's no visitor centre, no facilities, free access as far as I can tell. That's part of its appeal, really. It feels like something locals know about rather than a packaged experience. Worth an afternoon, certainly, but go in with modest expectations and you'll leave pleased.
