Cnwch Mawr

Cnwch Mawr is a modest peak in the hills above Aberystwyth that rewards walkers with proper views across Cardigan Bay without requiring a full day's commitment. You're looking at around 400 metres of elevation - not a mountaineer's challenge, but enough to earn the vista. The walk up is straightforward from the Aberystwyth side, following paths through moorland and rough grassland. On a clear day you can see south towards Pembrokeshire and north along the coast. It's the kind of place locals know and tourists often miss, which is precisely what makes it worth an hour or two.

The real draw here is accessibility. This isn't a slog like some of the bigger peaks further south. Families with reasonably fit kids will manage it without drama, and the paths are well-trodden enough that you won't spend half your time wondering if you've gone wrong. A couple of hours return journey, maybe two and a half if you're taking your time and stopping to look about.

If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Woodlands is barely half a mile away, or Brynllwyd glamping just under a mile - this makes a brilliant half-day excursion. Pair it with wandering Aberystwyth itself in the afternoon, checking out the seafront or the old castle ruins. It's the kind of thing that fills a holiday properly without needing grand plans. Bring a packed lunch if the weather's holding.
