Bleaberry Fell

The walk up Bleaberry Fell from Keswick takes you through proper Lake District fell country without the crowds you'd get on Catbells or Skiddaw. It's a straightforward ascent - nothing technical, but steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs by the time you reach the summit cairn at 1,975 feet. The views across Derwentwater are excellent, with Borrowdale spreading out below and the higher peaks forming a ragged line to the south. Allow two to three hours for the round trip if you're moving at a reasonable pace.

This is walker territory rather than a casual stroll. Families with older kids who've done a few hills before will manage fine, but toddlers would struggle on the steeper sections and muddy bits. The path itself is reasonably well-trodden and marked, though it can get boggy in places after rain - proper boots are worth the bother.

The real draw here is the quiet. You'll see a fraction of the people you'd encounter on the big names, and that makes the fell feel genuinely peaceful. The summit's modest - just a cairn and a view - but that's rather the point. It's honest, unpretentious Lake District.

Stay at Castlerigg Hall, just under two miles away near Keswick town, and you can tackle this after breakfast without faffing about with transfers. Combine it with gentler days around Derwentwater or the valley walks in Borrowdale for a proper fell holiday without overdoing it.
