Armboth Fell (summit)

The walk up Armboth Fell rewards you with one of those views that stops you dead in your tracks - Lake Thirlmere spread out below like a mirror, the fells rolling endlessly into the distance. It's not a dramatic peak by Lake District standards, but that's rather the point. You get proper solitude without the crowds that swarm Catbells or Skiddaw.

The fell sits just east of Keswick, making it ideal if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Castlerigg Hall is particularly well-placed, and the walk starts practically on your doorstep. Allow two to three hours for a steady circuit. The paths are good underfoot, though it gets boggy in places after rain, so proper boots matter.

History walkers will appreciate that this area is thick with old mining activity and shepherding routes. Families with confident walkers aged 10-plus will manage it fine, though younger kids might find the exposed sections a bit much. The real draw here is the quietness - you're far enough from the honeypot routes that you'll likely have the summit to yourself, especially on weekday mornings.

Go in clear weather if you can. The views on a grey day are pleasant enough, but they're truly special when the light's right. It's worth building into a broader fell-walking day - Great Langdale Glamping is close enough that you could tackle this and another fell without doubling back. Free to access, naturally. No facilities on the fell itself, so bring water.
