Ty Croes

Two stations serve this small railway town on Anglesey's western edge, making it a proper transport hub despite its modest size. Barclodiad y Gawres, one of Wales's finest Neolithic burial chambers, lies just minutes away on the coast. The prehistoric site overlooks dramatic cliffs, though getting there involves a bit of a trek across rough ground. Worth every step though. Porth Trecastell offers a decent beach nearby, backed by the remains of an Iron Age hillfort that commands cracking views across the Irish Sea.

The Anglesey Circuit brings a flash of modernity to this ancient corner of the island. Racing enthusiasts flock here for track days and events, the roar of engines echoing across fields where Bronze Age people once built their round cairns. Strange contrast, but it works.

Twll Bwgan cave provides shelter on wild days, while St Beuno's Church sits in splendid isolation by the shore - though reaching Eglwys Cwyfan at low tide requires careful timing. The little church on its tidal island is properly atmospheric when mist rolls in from the sea.

The A4080 connects Ty Croes to the larger town of Holyhead, twenty minutes north. Rail links run direct to Bangor and beyond, making this an unexpectedly well-connected base. Holiday parks scattered around the area offer everything from basic camping to glamping options, perfect for exploring Anglesey's western reaches without the crowds that plague the island's more famous spots.
