Walking across the windswept clifftop near Ty Croes, you'll find one of Anglesey's most atmospheric ancient sites. This 5,000-year-old burial chamber sits dramatically on the edge of Cable Bay, its weathered stones framing views across the Irish Sea that probably haven't changed much since Neolithic times.

What makes this place special isn't just its age - though being older than Stonehenge is fairly impressive - but the decorated stones inside the chamber. Five of the massive uprights bear carved spirals and zigzag patterns that archaeologists reckon are some of the finest prehistoric art in Britain. The carvings are subtle, so bring a torch if it's gloomy.

History buffs will love pondering what rituals took place here, while families might find the 20-minute clifftop walk more exciting than the stones themselves. Kids often enjoy scrambling around (carefully) and imagining ancient ceremonies.

The site's free to visit and always open, making it a proper good addition to a holiday at nearby parks like Silver Bay or Trewan Sands. Allow an hour including the walk from the car park - longer if you fancy exploring the coastal path. Best visited on a clear day when you can see across to the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland. Just mind the cliff edge; it's a long drop to the rocks below.
