Mynydd Bach Round Cairn

Standing on windswept moorland near Ty Croes, this Bronze Age burial cairn feels proper ancient - and properly isolated. The stone circle surrounds a central mound where someone important was laid to rest around 4,000 years ago, though you'll need a decent map and sturdy boots to find it.

Walking up from the nearest parking spot takes about twenty minutes across rough grassland. The cairn itself isn't massive - maybe fifteen metres across - but the setting is what makes it worthwhile. On a clear day you can see across to the mainland mountains, and there's something quite moving about standing where mourners gathered millennia ago.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the effort required to reach it, though families with small children might find the trek a bit much. The site is unmarked and unfenced, so it's free to visit whenever you fancy the walk. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you want to linger and soak up the atmosphere.
