Llyn Maelog

Walking around this shallow freshwater lake takes about 45 minutes and rewards you with proper views across to the Snowdonia mountains. Llyn Maelog sits quietly in the Anglesey countryside, fringed by reeds and home to coots, moorhens and the occasional heron if you're lucky.

Families with young children will find the flat path manageable, though it can get muddy after rain - wellies recommended. The lake attracts birdwatchers year-round, particularly during winter months when migrating ducks drop in. Dog walkers love it here too, as there's plenty of space for energetic pups to explore.

It's not going to take up your whole day - an hour covers it unless you're stopping for a proper picnic or letting the kids splash about in the shallows. The setting feels genuinely peaceful, a nice contrast to Anglesey's busier coastal attractions.

Staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Bodfan Farm or Shoreside Caravans makes this an easy morning stroll before heading off to explore more of the island. Silver Bay Holiday Park is a bit further out but puts you within striking distance of both the lake and Anglesey's spectacular coastline. Worth combining with a trip to nearby Rhosneigr for a proper day out.
