Stonehaven

Deep-fried Mars bars weren't invented here, but Stonehaven certainly perfected them. This proper Scottish fishing town clings to dramatic cliffs on the Aberdeenshire coast, where the North Sea crashes against red sandstone rocks with proper fury.

The harbour still works hard - fishing boats bob alongside pleasure craft, while seals lounge on the breakwater like they own the place. Up from the water, the old town spreads around the Tolbooth Museum, a 16th-century jail turned local history treasure trove. The Clock Tower marks the town centre, though you'll find more character down by the water.

Walk the coastal path south and you'll stumble upon Dunnicaer Pictish Fort, perched on a sea stack that's slowly crumbling into the waves. It's a bit precarious but the views are cracking. Inland, hills like Cheyne Hill and the Hill of Swanley offer proper Highland glimpses without the trek.

Fetteresso Castle ruins lurk in the countryside nearby, while the Mercat Cross anchors the old market square. The town's got that lived-in feel you don't find in touristy spots - locals still use Stonehaven Library as their meeting point, and the chip shops do a roaring trade year-round.

Getting here's straightforward - the train from Aberdeen takes 20 minutes, or it's a scenic coastal drive on the A90. The surrounding parks like Upper Crawton and Cloak Caravan Park put you right on the doorstep of both rugged coastline and rolling Aberdeenshire farmland. Perfect for exploring Dunnottar Castle just down the coast, or striking inland to Royal Deeside.
