Scotland's north-eastern fishing port might not win any beauty contests, but Fraserburgh has a raw, industrial charm that feels properly authentic. Wind whips off the North Sea most days, and the working harbour still lands serious catches - this isn't some sanitised tourist version of a fishing town.

The surrounding countryside tells older stories. Strichen Stone Circle sits just inland, a Bronze Age monument that predates most Scottish castles by millennia. More recent history lurks at the Chain Home Radar Stations at Hillhead and Rosehearty - wartime relics that helped defend Britain's northern approach.

Castle ruins pepper the landscape. Both Castle of Pitsligo and Castle of Pittulie offer glimpses into the area's feudal past, though neither will trouble Balmoral for grandeur. The real draw is the coastline itself - dramatic cliffs, working harbours like Rosehearty, and golf at Rosehearty Golf Club for those who fancy battling North Sea winds.

Getting here means the A90 from Aberdeen, about an hour's drive through increasingly sparse farmland. It's proper countryside once you leave the Granite City behind - rolling fields, scattered farms, and not much traffic.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to explore Fraserburgh's working harbour and the coastal villages, but far enough out to appreciate the peace. The area around Bawbee Loch is particularly quiet, while sites near Macduff put you within striking distance of the Moray Firth's gentler southern shores.
