Dunnottar Castle

The castle sits on a dramatic rocky headland just south of Stonehaven, surrounded on three sides by the North Sea. You'll spot it from miles away - that unmistakable silhouette of red sandstone cliffs with castle ruins perched on top like something from a film set. Because it basically is: Dunnottar's been used as a backdrop in Braveheart, Macbeth, and countless others, which tells you everything about how photogenic this place really is.

Walking out to the castle takes about ten minutes from the car park, and it's genuinely worth every step. The path winds down towards the headland, and as you get closer, the scale becomes apparent - those aren't small cliffs, they're proper dizzying drops. The ruins themselves span several centuries of Scottish history, from the medieval keep through to 17th-century additions. You can wander the courtyard, climb into towers, and look out across the Aberdeenshire coast. It's free to explore, which is remarkable given what you're getting.

History buffs will spend hours here; families with younger kids might manage 45 minutes to an hour before the scrambling around gets old. The walk isn't technically difficult, but it's steep going down and your legs will remind you on the way back up. Go on a clear day if possible - mist rolls in quickly and you'll lose the view entirely.

It sits perfectly within striking distance of Stonehaven Queen Elizabeth Park and the other caravan sites nearby, making it an essential detour for a Highlands trip. Combine it with a proper fish supper in Stonehaven town centre afterwards.
