Tolbooth Museum

The old tolbooth in Stonehaven is a squat, red-sandstone tower that's been watching over the harbour for nearly 400 years. It's the sort of building you'd walk past without thinking twice if someone didn't tell you to stop and look properly. Step inside and you're in a proper working museum run by locals who actually know what they're talking about - no corporate glossiness here, just genuine stories about the town's fishing heritage, its role in the Jacobite risings, and what life was really like when this place was the administrative heart of the settlement.

You're looking at maybe 45 minutes here if you read everything, less if you're just browsing. The space is compact but packed with detail - old photographs, documents, maritime bits and bobs. It appeals most to history buffs and anyone with a genuine interest in Scottish coastal towns rather than families with restless toddlers, though older kids studying local history will find it genuinely useful.

Free entry is a proper bonus. The opening hours are a bit limited - weekends only from October through March, then Wednesday to Monday in summer - so check ahead before you visit. Stonehaven itself is worth a wander for the clifftop walks and the harbourside, and you're ideally positioned for exploring Aberdeenshire. The town's got three excellent caravan parks within striking distance, with Stonehaven Queen Elizabeth Park practically on your doorstep at less than a mile away. This works as a rainy-day stop if you're camping nearby, but don't expect a major attraction - it's a genuinely local museum in the best possible sense.
