Play Park

The woodland around Play Park makes for a proper breath of fresh air just outside Stonehaven, where the Aberdeenshire coast meets the Scottish Highlands. It's a nature reserve that rewards a gentle wander rather than a full-day expedition - think an hour or so of pottering about spotting birds and enjoying whatever the weather decides to throw at you.

The paths wind through mature trees and open spaces, giving you enough variety to keep kids entertained without demanding serious hiking boots. There's something reassuring about walking ground that's been left mostly to its own devices. You're not fighting crowds or queuing for anything. On a decent day it's genuinely lovely; when it's drizzling (which, let's be honest, is often up here) it becomes more of a quick stomp than a leisurely stroll.

If you're camped at Stonehaven Queen Elizabeth Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite - practically on the doorstep at less than a mile away - this works brilliantly as a leg-stretcher without needing to drive anywhere. Upper Crawton Park and Hillhead Caravan Park are both within easy reach too, making it a sensible add-on rather than a destination in itself.

Families with young children will find the paths manageable, though there's not a café or facilities to speak of, so come prepared. It's the sort of place that justifies a visit if you're already in the area, but don't rearrange your holiday around it.
