Site of Cowie Castle

All that remains of Cowie Castle is a scattering of stones and earthworks on a coastal promontory just outside Stonehaven. It's not dramatic - no standing walls, no turrets - but the location tells you everything about why this 13th-century fortress mattered. From the site, you're looking straight out to sea with the North Sea wind in your face. This was a stronghold, a statement, a place that controlled shipping routes and kept watch over what mattered.

The castle belonged to the Marischal family, one of Scotland's most powerful clans, though there's precious little to see now beyond low banks and some scattered masonry. If you're into medieval Scottish history, it's worth the twenty-minute walk from Stonehaven town centre - the clifftop approach along the coastal path is excellent. Kids might find the stark emptiness disappointing, but walkers will appreciate the dramatic setting and the wider trail around the headland.

There's no visitor facility, no interpretation, and access is free. Allow an hour if you're properly wandering the ruins and taking in the views rather than simply ticking it off. It pairs well with Stonehaven itself - the old town is attractive and the seafront is genuinely pleasant. If you're camping at Stonehaven Queen Elizabeth Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Site, just half a mile away, this becomes an easy afternoon ramble. The ruins won't stop you dead, but the setting will.
