Forest Park

The Aberdeenshire coastline doesn't get much quieter than Forest Park. It's a proper nature reserve tucked between Stonehaven and the wilder stretches of the Scottish Highlands - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think.

What you're getting here is woodland walks through native Scots pine and mixed forest, with paths that range from gentle riverside strolls to steeper climbs if your legs are up for it. The reserve has that authentic Highland feel without being overwrought with visitor infrastructure. You'll spot red squirrels if you're lucky, various woodland birds, and the occasional roe deer picking its way through the undergrowth. It's not a theme park. There are no gift shops. That's rather the point.

Walkers absolutely love this place - particularly those who want something between a casual park amble and a proper hillside trek. Families with kids of seven or eight upwards will manage the easier routes without complaint. Anyone chasing peace and quiet rather than spectacle will find exactly what they're after here.

The nearest town is Stonehaven, just over the hill, where you'll find cafes and chip shops if you fancy refuelling. Several caravan parks sit within easy striking distance - Stonehaven Queen Elizabeth Park is barely a mile away, Upper Crawton Park a bit further if you want slightly quieter digs.

Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're doing any real walking. Go midweek if possible and you might have the place largely to yourself. It's the sort of reserve that repays a second visit once you've sussed out your preferred routes.
