Ballater

Royal trains once whisked Queen Victoria through this Highland valley to her beloved Balmoral, and you can still feel that regal connection in every granite cottage and tartan-draped shop window. Ballater sits where the River Dee curves through ancient Scots pines, with the Cairngorms rising like sleeping giants on all sides.

Morrone looms directly above the town, its heathery flanks offering cracking views across Deeside for anyone willing to tackle the well-marked path. The walk takes a couple of hours, but the panorama stretches from Lochnagar to the Lairig Ghru. Less demanding souls might prefer the gentle stroll to the Linn of Dee, where the river crashes through a narrow granite gorge in spectacular fashion.

Serious hillwalkers have proper mountains on their doorstep. Beinn a' Bhùird South Top and the cluster of Munros around Càrn a' Choire Bhòidheach provide challenging day hikes, while peaks like Culardoch and Càrn an t-Sagairt Mòr reward the effort with wilderness views that stretch to the North Sea.

The town itself keeps things understated. Local shops still display their royal warrants, and the Old Royal Station houses a decent tearoom and heritage centre. Thursday brings the farmers' market to the square, where you'll find proper shortbread and locally shot venison.

Ballater sits 40 miles west of Aberdeen on the A93, making it perfectly placed for exploring both the eastern Cairngorms and Royal Deeside. Staying at one of the nearby parks puts you within easy reach of Balmoral's grounds, the whisky trail through Speyside, and some of Scotland's finest mountain walking.
