Dunnottar House, Walled Garden

The walled garden at Dunnottar House is a proper surprise if you're camping nearby in Stonehaven. You're looking at a Victorian-era space that's been restored to show what Scottish gardens looked like when they meant business - fruit walls, vegetable beds, the lot. It's the kind of place that makes sense once you're actually standing in it, surrounded by those thick stone walls that keep the east wind at bay.

Walking the paths here takes maybe 45 minutes to an hour, longer if you're the type to read every label and photograph the heritage apple trees. The walls themselves are honestly more interesting than you'd think - built to trap heat, they're decorated with trained fruit trees and climbing plants that have clearly been there for decades. There's a real sense of stepping into how country estates actually functioned, not just how they looked from the main house.

It works brilliantly if you're staying at Stonehaven Queen Elizabeth Park or one of the other caravan sites nearby - a half-hour walk or short drive gets you there. History enthusiasts and serious gardeners will get the most from it; kids under ten might find it a bit slow unless they're keen on spotting insects and climbing on (approved) garden structures. The whole thing feels less touristy than a lot of Scottish attractions, which is either refreshing or means you'll want to check opening times before you visit. Worth combining with a visit to Dunnottar Castle itself, which dominates the cliffs just down the coast.
