Stone-built streets climb steeply from the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, while sheep-dotted fells roll away in every direction. Skipton feels properly Yorkshire - no tourist veneer here, just a working market town that happens to sit bang in the middle of some spectacular countryside.

The castle dominates the high street, one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in the north. Market day transforms the cobbles into a proper scrum of local farmers and cheese sellers. Between shopping, you can wander the canal towpath or climb up to Parceval Hall for views across Wharfedale.

Walk twenty minutes from town and you're on genuine fell country. Simon's Seat offers cracking panoramas without the tourist crowds of the Lake District peaks. Earl Seat and Thorpe Fell provide easier climbs if you fancy something gentler after a pub lunch.

Trains run direct from Leeds in under an hour, making this surprisingly accessible for a place that feels genuinely remote. The A65 connects you to Kendal and the Lakes to the north, while the A59 heads east towards Harrogate and York.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense - you get the best of both worlds. Wake up to proper countryside silence, then stroll into town for supplies or a decent breakfast. Bolton Abbey Estate and Wood Nook offer good bases, while Coxons Farm's glamping pods suit families who want a bit more comfort than canvas. The surrounding network of bridleways and footpaths means you can explore the Dales properly without fighting for parking spaces in Grassington or Malham.
