About Folly Top
The name comes from a folly that once stood here, though there's not much to see of it now. Most hikers tackle this as a two to three hour round trip from the valley floor, and it's decent going without being brutal - fine for walkers of middling ability, and families with confident legs can manage it easily enough. The terrain is open moorland, so there's nowhere to hide if the weather turns, which it does quickly up here. That said, on a decent morning it's an excellent escape from the caravan parks clustered around Skipton and Bolton Abbey.
Worth the detour if you're based at any of the nearby sites - Howgill Lodge is barely two miles away, and Wharfedale Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the valley. It's the sort of walk that takes ninety minutes and feels like proper achievement without eating your entire day. No facilities at the top, so bring water. Free to visit, obviously.
