Whithill

The walk up Whithill, just outside Skipton, is proper Pennine fell territory - nothing fancy, just honest moorland that rewards you with views stretching across Wharfedale. It's the sort of peak that works brilliantly as a half-day outing if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Howgill Lodge or Bolton Abbey Estate.

You're looking at a straightforward hill walk rather than a scramble. The ascent isn't steep enough to feel dangerous, but it's steep enough that younger kids might need encouragement. Once you're up, the vistas open out - moorland rolling in every direction, with Skipton itself visible if the weather's decent. On a clear day you can pick out features across the Dales.

Allow a couple of hours there and back from the car park, depending on fitness. It's free, naturally - no gates, no charges. The terrain is bracken and grass underfoot, boggy in patches after rain, so decent boots matter more than here in summer. Spring and autumn work well; winter can be grim, and summer midges can be absolutely maddening.

This suits walkers after something low-key but satisfying. Families with primary-school-age kids will manage it without too much fuss. If you're staying at Wharfedale or Catgill Farm, it's a cracking option to stretch your legs without spending half the day driving. Just go with realistic expectations - it's a proper moorland fell, not a showstopper, but honest and unpretentious.
