Parceval Hall

The gardens at Parceval Hall are worth the short drive north of Skipton if you're after something a bit different from the usual park stroll. Set in the Wharfedale valley, this is a proper working estate with gardens that actually feel lived-in rather than roped off behind velvet cordons.

You'll find yourself wandering through woodland gardens, herbaceous borders, and a kitchen garden that changes with the seasons. There's a sense of being let loose in someone's back garden, which is exactly the point - the Wainwright family have maintained this place for generations, and it shows. The gardens flow naturally into the landscape rather than fighting against it, which is refreshing when you've seen too many manicured heritage properties.

Walkers will appreciate how the grounds connect to the wider valley - it's easy to turn your visit into something longer. Families with older kids will enjoy it more than very young ones; there's not much in the way of play equipment, but the space itself is brilliant for running around. History buffs might find the house itself interesting, though opening arrangements can be variable.
