Burnsall Park

The River Wharfe cuts through a proper slice of Yorkshire Dales countryside here, and Burnsall Park sits right along that stretch. It's a nature reserve that feels more like a local secret than a managed attraction - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. You're looking at riverside walks, woodland paths, and genuine quiet. The village of Burnsall itself is close by Skipton, so it slots neatly into a wider exploration of the area.

Walkers will get the most from it. The terrain's straightforward enough for families with kids who can manage a decent ramble, but it's not a theme park playground situation. You need to want to be out there with nature, not looking for activities. An hour is enough if you're just stretching your legs; half a day if you're properly exploring the full length of the park. Bird watchers tend to linger.

The park works brilliantly as a break between staying at one of the nearby caravan sites - Howgill Lodge is barely two miles away, or Bolton Abbey Estate if you want a bit more infrastructure. Pop down to the river, have a walk, grab some air, then back to the campsite. It's the kind of place that justifies a base in the Dales rather than rushing through.

Free to access. There's no official visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which keeps it refreshingly unpretentious. Go early morning or late afternoon when it's genuinely peaceful.
