Brown Bank Hill

Rolling fields give way to limestone pavement as you climb this modest but rewarding fell northeast of Skipton. Brown Bank Hill sits at 426 metres - hardly a Munro, but the views across Wharfedale more than justify the effort.

The ascent takes about an hour from the nearest parking spot, following well-trodden sheep tracks through typical Dales countryside. Nothing too challenging here, though the final stretch gets a bit rocky underfoot. Proper walking boots are sensible.

From the summit cairn, you'll get cracking views south towards Bolton Abbey and the Wharfe valley floor. On clear days, the Yorkshire Three Peaks emerge on the horizon - Pen-y-ghent's distinctive profile is unmistakable. It's the sort of spot that rewards early morning visits when the light catches the valley mist.

Walkers staying at nearby sites like Bolton Abbey Estate campsite will find this makes a lovely half-day excursion. Families with older children (say, 10 plus) should manage fine, though toddlers might struggle with the terrain. The hill sees far fewer visitors than the popular peaks further north, so you'll often have the summit to yourself.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip, including time to properly appreciate the panorama. Pack a flask - there's something deeply satisfying about a brew with those views spread out below.
