Numberstones End

The walk up to Numberstones End from Skipton way is proper moorland rambling - windswept, atmospheric, the sort of place that makes you feel small. It's a modest peak by Pennine standards, but the views from the top sweep across the Yorkshire Dales with surprising breadth. On a clear day you can see for miles across open heather and rough grass.

There's nothing built here, no visitor infrastructure, just you and the landscape. The pull is straightforward: it's an honest walk with decent views and the kind of solitude you don't get at busier peaks. Walkers will appreciate it; families with younger kids might find the moorland setting a bit bleak unless they're already hooked on fell walking. Allow a couple of hours there and back from the nearest road access.

It fits well into a wider Dales trip - you're close enough to Skipton itself for supplies and meals, and there are several caravan parks within a few miles if you're based locally: Bolton Abbey Estate and Wharfedale both offer proper bases for exploring the area. The walk doesn't require technical skill, just reasonable fitness and decent boots. Go when the weather's forecast to be clear; there's not much to recommend it in low cloud and drizzle. Early autumn is excellent - the light's better and the crowds are thinner than summer weekends.
