Former mining town turned seaside resort, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea has shaken off its industrial past to become something rather special. The sweeping sandy bay feels properly wild when winter storms roll in, though summer brings families to what's still a refreshingly unpretentious stretch of Northumberland coast. You won't find kiss-me-quick hats here.

Newbiggin Beach stretches for miles, backed by grassy dunes that make for proper walks when the tide's out. The Couple Statue - a striking bronze sculpture by Sean Henry - stands sentinel in the bay, creating one of the most photographed spots on this coast. It's become the town's calling card, though locals remember when it caused quite the stir upon arrival.

Culture vultures will find more than expected. The Newbiggin Art Trail weaves contemporary sculptures throughout the town, while Buoy 11 and Spirit of Place galleries showcase local and regional artists. The restored Mechanics Institute speaks to the town's working heritage, as does The Cable House - a reminder of when undersea cables connected Britain to the world.

Transport links aren't brilliant, mind. The nearest railway station is Cramlington, about 8 miles inland, so having a car helps enormously. Blyth sits just down the coast if you need proper shops, though Newbiggin's high street covers the basics well enough.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense for exploring this stretch of coast. Sandy Bay and Church Point Holiday Parks put you right on the doorstep, while the coastline north towards Amble and south to Whitley Bay opens up easily from here. You're also well-placed for day trips inland to Hadrian's Wall country.
