Bamburgh

Standing proud on its volcanic rock outcrop, Bamburgh Castle dominates this Northumberland coastline like nothing else in Britain. The fortress commands three miles of golden sand below, where the North Sea crashes against one of England's most dramatic shorelines.

Bamburgh village sits quietly in the castle's shadow. Proper old-fashioned stone cottages line the single main street, while the Grace Darling Museum tells the story of the local lighthouse keeper's daughter who became a Victorian hero. The Grace Darling Memorial stands testament to her 1838 rescue mission, and you can visit the Darling family grave in the churchyard nearby.

That beach though. Miles of pristine sand stretch north towards the Farne Islands, backed by rolling dunes where skylarks nest. It's never packed, even in summer - perhaps because parking's limited and it's a bit of a trek from most places.

The Last Remaining Corner of Friary offers a glimpse into medieval Bamburgh, when this was more than just a castle and a few houses. These days, the village feels wonderfully unhurried.

Getting here takes commitment. The nearest train station is Berwick-upon-Tweed, twenty miles north. Most visitors drive via the A1, turning off at Belford. The coastal B1340 offers better views but takes longer.

Staying at one of the local holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're right on the doorstep of the Northumberland Coast Path, with Holy Island reachable at low tide and the Scottish Borders just up the road. Several campsites dot the area around Bamburgh and nearby Budle Bay, giving you a proper base for exploring this wild stretch of coast without the daily drive from Newcastle.
