Berwick-upon-Tweed

Three border crossings in four centuries will do things to a place. The surrounding forests like Girneynick Plantation and Shiellow Wood offer good walking, while archaeological sites including an Iron Age Camp remind you this landscape has been settled for millennia.

Berwick sits on the East Coast Main Line, making it easily accessible from Edinburgh (45 minutes) or Newcastle (under an hour). The A1 runs nearby for drivers. Several holiday parks dot the surrounding countryside, from coastal spots like Budle Bay Campsite to inland options near the Cheviot Hills. Having a base outside town makes sense - you can explore Berwick's walls and streets without the parking hassles, then venture into Northumberland's spectacular hinterland or nip across to the Scottish Borders.
