Bamburgh Castle

The castle sits on a rocky crag above Bamburgh village, commanding the Northumberland coast the way fortifications did a thousand years ago. It's proper dramatic - the kind of place where you understand immediately why someone built a castle here rather than, say, five miles inland on flat ground.

You can walk around the grounds and explore the keep, which is the main draw. The walls are thick enough that you feel the weight of history, and the views across to the Farne Islands and down the coast justify the climb alone. The bailey is worth a wander too, though parts are residential now. Plan two to three hours if you're serious about it; an hour if you just want the photos and the views.

It works brilliantly for families who like a bit of clambering about, and history buffs will find plenty to chew on - there's been a fortress here since Roman times, though what you're seeing is mostly Norman keep from the 12th century. The climb to the top of the keep is steep and the stairs are narrow, so it's not ideal for very small children or anyone with mobility issues.

Admission costs, and it's seasonal - worth checking ahead. If you're camping nearby, Northumberland Coast Camp gets solid reviews and sits just three miles away. Bamburgh Under Canvas is closer still at 1.4 miles, though ratings aren't published. The castle pairs well with a wider Northumberland coast trip - Lindisfarne is a day trip away, and the beaches here are proper lovely.
