Bamburgh Lighthouse

The lighthouse sits on the rocks at Bamburgh's northern edge, a red and white striped tower that's been guiding ships since 1905. It's not a massive structure - nothing like the drama of Whitley Bay or Tynemouth - but it commands attention because of where it stands. The tower rises from the bare coastal rocks with the North Sea crashing below, and on a grey day it feels properly isolated. You can walk right up to it from the village, which takes about fifteen minutes from the main beach.

This is one for photographers and anyone interested in how lighthouses actually work rather than just how they look. The exterior is the real draw - the stripes, the keeper's cottage beside it, the raw Northumberland coast framing everything. Scrambling down to photograph it from the rocks is worth doing at low tide, though watch your footing. The light itself still operates, though access inside varies and isn't reliably open to visitors, so don't bank on it.

If you're camping at Budle Farm or Bamburgh Under Canvas, the lighthouse is a decent short walk and breaks up a beach day nicely. It pairs well with exploring Bamburgh Castle itself, which dominates the village and is far more substantial. The lighthouse works best as a thirty-minute stop rather than a destination in itself. Go for the setting and the light on the stonework rather than expecting a full visitor experience.
