Alcan Aluminium Lagoon

Just outside Newbiggin-by-the-Sea sits something you won't find on most Northumberland itineraries - a proper industrial heritage site that's also become a surprising wildlife magnet. The Alcan Aluminium Lagoon is essentially what it sounds like: a vast flooded former mining and manufacturing area that's transformed into open water over the decades. It's genuinely striking in person - all that blue where there used to be industry, with nothing between you and the horizon.

The lagoon itself is best appreciated from the perimeter paths rather than close-up - you get the scale better that way. Birdwatchers absolutely love it here; the water attracts wintering wildfowl and waders, particularly between autumn and spring. If you're bringing kids, they'll enjoy spotting birds and the sheer oddness of such a large body of water in a former industrial zone. History buffs might find the whole Alcan story intriguing - it's a tangible reminder of Northumberland's manufacturing past.

There's no visitor centre or facilities, so it's free and straightforward: park up in Newbiggin and walk the accessible routes around the edge. Allow an hour for a proper wander, longer if you're serious about bird identification. It works well as a half-day addition to a holiday park stay - you're only a couple of miles from Church Point, Sandy Bay, or Cresswell Towers. The walk itself is flat and manageable, though exposed on windy days. Go early morning for the best wildlife spotting.
