About Leek

Antique shops line the narrow streets where the weekly market has traded for centuries. Leek sits right on the edge of the Peak District, making it a proper gateway town that hasn't quite sold its soul to tourism yet. The Victorian silk mills still dominate parts of the skyline, and there's a genuine working-town feel that many similar places have lost.

Rudyard Lake stretches out just south of town - a Victorian reservoir that's become something of a local playground. The Rudyard Lake Sailing Club keeps things lively on summer weekends, while the old railway line that once carried day-trippers from the Potteries now makes for decent walking. You can still catch the narrow-gauge railway at Rudyard station for a proper nostalgic chuff through the countryside.

Walking is the main draw here. Gun peak offers cracking views across the Staffordshire moorlands, though it's a bit of a trek from town. The woods are brilliant - Hunthouse Wood, Back Wood and the various plantations create a network of paths that'll keep you busy for days. Barnswood Scout Camp Site marks good access to some of the quieter trails.

Leek's about 15 minutes from the A50, making it surprisingly accessible despite feeling properly rural. Hanley and Stoke-on-Trent are 20 minutes south if you need proper shops or a railway station.

Staying at one of the local parks puts you right in walking distance of both the town centre and the moors. Most sites around here are small and family-run rather than flashy holiday complexes - which suits the area perfectly. You're close enough to nip into Leek for supplies or a pub dinner, but far enough out to feel like you're properly in the countryside.
