Back Wood

The woodland around Back Wood offers proper walking territory just outside Leek, with dense trees and quiet paths that feel worlds away from the town itself. It's the sort of place you stumble into expecting nothing much and end up staying longer than planned, picking your way through undergrowth and following what might generously be called trails. The forest floor changes with the seasons - damp leaf litter in autumn, muddy in winter, firmer underfoot come summer.

Walkers will get the most from this spot. It's not dramatic or particularly famous, which is rather the point. No visitor centre, no signage to speak of, just woodland doing what woodland does. An hour's ambling is plenty, though you could easily stretch it if you've got the time and proper boots. The trees are tall enough that you feel enclosed without feeling trapped.

If you're camping at Rudyard Vale, barely half a mile away, this becomes your morning walk before breakfast. The Leek Camping and Caravanning Club Site sits three miles south if you're after something more structured. Neither situation demands much planning - just turn up with sensible footwear and go. There's something refreshing about a wood that doesn't need explaining or booking or a gift shop. Bring weather-appropriate clothing and remember that woodland can be slippery and uneven underfoot, particularly after rain. It's genuine local walking, the kind where you might see nobody else all morning.
