Rea Cliffe Wood

The woodland around Rea Cliffe, just outside Leek, offers proper forest walking without the crowds you'd find on the Peak District's main trails. It's a mixed woodland - decent mix of broadleaf and conifer - with streams running through and the sort of quiet that actually feels restorative rather than forced.

You're looking at a few hours maximum here, depending on how far you fancy wandering. The terrain is gentle woodland floor, muddy when wet (and it's the Midlands, so often wet), with a handful of marked paths threading through. It's ideal for families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground without constant hand-holding, or for anyone wanting a straightforward forest ramble before heading into town. Walkers get genuine peace; history enthusiasts will find less to grip onto.

Being so close to Leek makes this a decent addition to a longer day out - tick off some woodland air, then explore the town's independent shops and cafes. The caravan parks scattered within a few miles - Rudyard Vale is barely ten minutes away - mean you can stay local and keep things simple.

Free to access, obviously. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I could find, so come prepared. Best in spring or early summer when the woodland actually feels alive; winter's damp and claustrophobic under dense cover. Not a destination in itself, but exactly the sort of undemanding green space that makes a holiday feel properly outdoorsy without demanding much effort.
