Burton-on-Trent

The clock tower stands sentinel over a town that made Britain drunk for centuries. Burton-on-Trent built its reputation on brewing - the water here contains gypsum that creates the perfect bitter, and nearly every major brewery had operations here at some point. These days it's quieter, but you can still taste that legacy at spots like Blythe Brewery.

Most visitors rush through on their way to Lichfield, missing Burton's understated appeal. The town centre feels properly lived-in rather than touristy, with locals going about their business around the War Memorial and down to the market. It's honest, unpretentious Staffordshire.

Lichfield itself sits just down the road, and it's well worth the short journey. The cathedral city has considerably more polish - Lichfield Garrick puts on cracking productions, and St Mary's in the Market Square offers a decent look at local history. Samuel Johnson was born here, hence all the literary connections you'll spot around town.

Cannock Chase spreads out to the southeast, offering proper countryside within easy reach. The rolling heathland and ancient woodland make for brilliant walking, and several holiday parks dot the area around Four Oaks Farm. From Burton, you're also within striking distance of the Peak District's southern edges.

Getting here couldn't be simpler - Burton sits on the main rail line between Birmingham and Derby, with regular services throughout the day. The A38 cuts right past if you're driving. Staying at one of the nearby parks gives you easy access to both Burton's brewing heritage and Lichfield's more refined attractions, plus Cannock Chase when you fancy stretching your legs in proper countryside.
