Leek

The Pennines meet the Peak District here, creating some of the most dramatic moorland scenery in Staffordshire. This market town sits at the edge of England's first national park, where gritstone edges and rolling hills stretch as far as the eye can see.

Leek feels properly northern - stone buildings, narrow streets, and a no-nonsense character that's refreshing after the chocolate-box villages further south. The town itself is compact enough to explore in an hour or two, but it's really the surrounding landscape that draws visitors. Ramshaw Rocks jut from the moor like ancient monuments, while Hen Cloud offers cracking views across the valley for those willing to make the climb.

Blake Mere provides a gentler walk, though locals swear the Mermaid Pool nearby has mystical properties. Don't expect crowds - this corner of Staffordshire remains blissfully quiet even on bank holidays. Black Brook Nature Reserve is particularly lovely in early morning, when mist clings to the valley floor.

The Roaches ridge dominates the eastern horizon, with Morridge offering equally spectacular walking to the west. Gib Torr Rocks make for an excellent sunset spot, though it's a bit of a trek from town. Merryton Low is less visited but arguably more rewarding for serious walkers.

Leek sits roughly 20 miles northeast of Stoke-on-Trent, making it easily accessible by car though public transport is limited. Having a base at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense - you can explore the quieter corners of the Peak District while avoiding the crowds that descend on Bakewell and Castleton. The area rewards those who take their time, with new views and hidden corners revealing themselves to patient explorers.
