Blake Mere

Blake Mere is a proper little lake sitting just outside Leek, the sort of place you'd stumble upon and think "how did I not know this existed?" It's not vast - more of a substantial pond than a sprawling reservoir - but that's rather the point. The water is clear enough on a decent day, and there's woodland wrapped around it that gives the whole spot a rather intimate feel.

You can walk the perimeter easily enough, which takes the better part of an hour depending on your pace. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; the place draws plenty of them. Anglers reckon it's worth a go too, though you'll want to check what's actually biting before you head out. The banks are accessible in most places, and it's flat enough that families with younger kids won't struggle, though pushing a buggy around the full circuit might test your patience on the muddier sections.

It costs nothing to visit and there are no formal opening hours to worry about - just turn up. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be quieter, and the light's usually better then anyway. If you're camped at Blackshaw Moor or Longnor Wood, both within a couple of miles, it's an easy slot into a day wandering the Peak District foothills. Don't expect dramatic views or anything Instagram-worthy, but if you want a gentle walk, some fresh air, and a bit of water watching without the crowds of bigger attractions, Blake Mere delivers. It's the kind of place that stays with you precisely because it doesn't try too hard.
