Big Chair

There's a 21-foot wooden chair sitting on the outskirts of Leek, and yes, it's exactly as odd as it sounds. Built in the 1990s as a quirky roadside attraction, the Big Chair has become one of those wonderfully daft landmarks that makes you pull over just to see if it's real. It is. You can walk right up to it, take the inevitable photo, and marvel at the sheer pointlessness of the whole thing - which is precisely why it works.

Unless you're properly into outsized roadside oddities, you'll spend about ten minutes here maximum. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation board, no gift shop. Just a massive chair and your camera roll. Families with young kids might find it amusing for a few minutes; teenagers will take one photo and move on. It's the sort of stop you make if you're already in the area rather than a reason to visit Staffordshire on its own.

Free to view, obviously. The nearest base is Leek itself, which sits on the edge of the Staffordshire Moorlands. If you're camping at The Hollies or Blackshaw Moor, it's basically on your doorstep - worth a quick detour between activities rather than a destination. The real value is as a novelty break during a longer park holiday in the area. Don't expect magic, but do expect a laugh. Sometimes that's enough.
