The Roaches

Gritstone edges jut skyward like broken teeth across this dramatic moorland ridge, creating one of Staffordshire's most striking natural landmarks. The Roaches offers proper hill walking with rewarding views across the Peak District, though the rocky outcrops and steep drops mean it's not suitable for very young children or anyone with mobility issues.

Walkers tackle the main ridge path in around two hours, though rock climbers often spend full days here tackling the challenging gritstone routes. The summit views stretch across to Shutlingsloe and the Cheshire Plain on clear days - well worth the effort. Wild wallabies supposedly roam these moors, descendants of escapees from a private zoo, though spotting one requires serious luck.

Leek sits just three miles away, making this an excellent day out from any of the nearby holiday parks. Blackshaw Moor and other camping spots around Leek put you within easy reach for an early morning climb. The walking here suits confident hikers rather than casual strollers - the terrain can be boggy and the weather changes quickly. Pack proper boots and waterproofs even on sunny days. Free to access year-round, though parking can fill up at weekends when the weather's decent.
