Racing fans know this Staffordshire market town well - the famous racecourse has been drawing crowds since 1898, hosting National Hunt meetings throughout the winter months. But Uttoxeter offers more than just the sport of kings. The compact town centre feels properly lived-in, with independent shops mixing alongside the usual high street suspects.

Bramshall Road Park proves surprisingly extensive for such a modest-sized place, complete with a decent skatepark that actually gets used. The Dove Church anchors the town's quieter side, while several nature reserves like Pennycroft Park and Oldfields provide green breathing space just minutes from the centre. Denstone College Golf Club offers a challenging round if you fancy a proper 18 holes.

The surrounding countryside rolls gently towards the Derbyshire border, with the Tean Valley Meadow Nature Trust protecting some lovely wetland habitat just outside town. It's classic Staffordshire - neither dramatic hills nor flat plains, but pleasant pastoral country that's easy on the eye.

Getting here couldn't be simpler. The A50 dual carriageway whisks you from the M6 in about 20 minutes, while the train from Derby takes roughly the same time. Birmingham's just 40 minutes down the road, making this a handy base for exploring the southern Peak District or the pottery towns without the urban hassle.

Staying at one of the local holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to nip into town for supplies or a pub lunch, yet surrounded by proper countryside. Alton Towers sits just 15 minutes away - ideal if you're brave enough for The Smiler but prefer quieter accommodation afterwards.
