Uttoxeter

The red brick market town sprawls across Staffordshire countryside where racing and agriculture still matter. Uttoxeter has proper market town bones - wide streets that once hosted cattle sales, pubs that remember better times, and a racecourse that brings the crowds twice weekly during season.

Most visitors know the place for its National Hunt racing. The track sits just outside town, drawing punters from across the Midlands for decent sport and surprisingly good food. But there's more here than horses. The Church of St Mary and St Barlok anchors the old quarter with Norman foundations, while Wootton Lodge stands as a fine example of Jacobean architecture worth the short drive.

What really sets this area apart is the woodland. Uttoxeter sits surrounded by ancient forests - Heath Wood, Parkgate Wood, and Lee Wood offer proper walking without the Peak District crowds. The Weaver Hills rise to the north, giving cracking views across three counties on clear days. It's proper countryside, the sort where you'll spot deer more often than dog walkers.

Getting here couldn't be easier. The A50 runs right past, connecting to the M6 in minutes. Burton upon Trent lies eight miles south for bigger shops and better restaurants, while the Peak District starts just fifteen miles north.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough for easy access to the racecourse and local pubs, yet far enough out to wake up to birdsong rather than traffic. The surrounding woodland means proper walks start right from your pitch, and both Alton Towers and the pottery towns are under an hour's drive when you fancy a change of pace.
