Ciff Wood

Thick canopy overhead blocks out most daylight even on bright afternoons, making Ciff Wood feel properly ancient. This substantial stretch of woodland near Uttoxeter doesn't get the crowds of better-known Staffordshire forests, which works in its favour if you're after a peaceful ramble.

Well-maintained paths wind through mixed deciduous trees, though some sections can get properly muddy after rain - sturdy boots recommended. The wood covers enough ground to keep keen walkers occupied for a good hour or two, with several circular routes possible depending on how far you fancy going.

Families with younger children might find it a bit samey after 30 minutes, as there's no playground or obvious focal point beyond the trees themselves. Dog walkers absolutely love it here though, with plenty of space for off-lead adventures away from traffic.

Access appears to be free year-round, though I'd check locally about any restrictions during nesting season. The woodland works well as part of a longer Staffordshire break, particularly if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Callow Top Holiday Park or the glamping options around Uttoxeter. It's the sort of place that's lovely for an early morning walk before the day heats up, or when you need to stretch your legs between attractions.
