Fifteen named peaks for serious hillwalking Remote corner of Mull with no crowds Hour's drive from Craignure ferry terminal Red deer and golden eagle territory

About Isle of Mull

Wild heather moorlands stretch endlessly across this remote corner of Mull, where ancient volcanic peaks rise like sentinels from the boggy terrain. Fifteen named summits dot the landscape here - from the imposing bulk of Beinn Talaidh to the craggy outline of Creag Dhubh - making it a hillwalker's paradise that feels utterly removed from civilisation.

This isn't tourist Mull. While the main town of Tobermory draws the crowds with its coloured houses, this southeastern peninsula remains gloriously empty save for sheep and red deer. The walking is proper Scottish Highland stuff - think trackless moorland, sudden weather changes, and views that'll stop you dead. Beinn Fhada offers perhaps the finest panorama, while the twin peaks of Cruachan Dearg and Cruachan Beag provide a challenging but rewarding day out.

Getting here requires commitment. You'll need to drive the length of Mull from the Craignure ferry terminal - a good hour's journey on single-track roads. But that journey is half the appeal, winding through glens where golden eagles circle overhead and past lochs that mirror the sky perfectly.

Staying at one of the local holiday parks makes perfect sense for exploring these hills. Island Pods and Port nan Gael Campsite both offer basic but comfortable accommodation right in the heart of the walking country. No fancy facilities, just you, the mountains, and some of Scotland's most unspoiled wilderness on your doorstep. The silence at night is profound.
