Cruachan Dearg

Getting to the summit of Cruachan Dearg means a proper walk, but standing at 673 metres on the Isle of Mull, you're rewarded with views that stretch across to Morvern and beyond. It's a straightforward hill rather than a technical climb - most walkers manage it in a couple of hours up, same coming down - but the path can be boggy and the weather turns fast, so come prepared.

This one appeals to hikers who want a genuine ridge walk without needing rock scrambling skills. The views from the top are genuinely worth the effort, though I'll be honest - on a grey day it's just grass and cloud, so timing matters. You'll see why people bother if you go on a clear morning.

Families with older kids who enjoy walking will get something from it. Younger ones might find the trudge tedious unless they're keen climbers in the making. The path is well-walked and not technical, but it does involve proper elevation gain through moorland.

If you're based at Island Pods or Port nan Gael Campsite nearby, both excellent spots for a Mull holiday, Cruachan Dearg fits nicely into a day's exploring. It's a genuine Mull experience rather than a tourist tick-box. Allow three to four hours all in. Bring proper boots - bog is bog - and check conditions before you go. Free to attempt, obviously. The island's weather can be moody, so go when the forecast looks cooperative.
